When most people think of Oktoberfest, they picture oversized beer mugs, Bavarian outfits, and lively music.
While those are certainly part of the experience, the true roots of Oktoberfest tell a much richer story—one of royal celebration, tradition, and community spirit.

A Royal Beginning
Oktoberfest began in 1810 in Munich, Bavaria, to mark the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen.
The citizens of Munich were invited to a five-day festival held on the fields in front of the city gates, later named the Theresienwiese (“Therese’s Meadow”) in her honour.
The celebration ended with horse races, which were such a success that the event was repeated the next year—eventually evolving into the annual Volksfest (people’s festival) that millions know and love today.
More Than Just Beer
Yes, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival—but it’s also about much more:
- Family and community – Parades, music, and fun for all ages
- Traditional food – Roast chicken (Hendl), pretzels, sausages, sauerkraut, and more
- Bavarian pride – Dirndls, Lederhosen, folk dances, and regional customs
- Cultural preservation – A celebration of German identity and values passed down through generations
At its heart, Oktoberfest is a cultural celebration—a joyful tribute to heritage, community, and shared history.
